Byte Repair is in the process of formally verifying the Operational Model of ESBMC, powered by ESBMC itself; the first time the tool has been turned on its own operational core. The work will increase ESBMC’s accuracy and reduce false results caused by edge case conditions, while demonstrating that mathematically-grounded analysis can scale to production-sized projects; ESBMC itself spans over 1.3 million lines of code.

The broader effort is straightforward: take formal verification out of the lab and into real-world software. Most analysis tools either rely on heuristics that miss bugs or on formal techniques that don’t scale. Byte Repair closes the gap, finding defects in large codebases with the rigour of formal proof and the practicality of an automated workflow.

Verifying ESBMC with itself is a proof point, not the goal. The same approach extends to safety-critical systems, security-sensitive infrastructure, and any large codebase where missing a bug carries real cost.
